Bronze archer
Collection Artworld: Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts
Date 800-600 BCE
Description This small figure of an archer stands with the left arm bent at right angles with the hand holding a bow, and the right arm bent with the palm of the hand outstretched. The right hand appears large in comparison with the rest of the body. The figures wears a belted tunic with a central rectangular panel, and a collection of arrows is slung across the back. The head is elongated and facial features have been modelled. Incised lines define the hair and hand. A horned helmet adorns the head. The figure is made from bronze which is a rich brown colour. A green and rust coloured deposit covers much of the surface creating a rough texture. The lower half of the legs and feet are missing.

Subject sculpture in the round, figurine, human figurine, male figurine

Context This archer has less detailed accoutrements than UEA 589, although he also stands with his right hand held up in a salute and holds a bow in his left hand. He has a quiver full of arrows on his back and wears a belted tunic with a rectangular panel (presumably a buckle), greaves and a horned helmet. The modelling is summary and bodily proportions elongated. The legs are missing from below the knees. An archer in the Museo Archaeologico Nazionale di Cagliari is dressed in a very similar fashion and has the same pose (Lilliu, 1966: 78-9, no. 26, figs. 69-71).
